When Teya, one of the leads of Earl Haig’s eco-club, reached out for see if we could help them hold native plant gardening projects, we had to think outside the box. The window for winter-sowing had closed but we still wanted to have a way to teach students about it, so we decided to create a specific workshop that used seeds that had been cold-stratified in the fridge, and would readily germinate after a few weeks.

We led the students on workshop to learn how to winter-sow native plants as the followed the steps of adding soil to pots, sowing seeds and covering with chicken wire. Students then had the opportunity to pick up additional kits to plant additional pots at home or share with others.

The pots were then placed outside.
