Anca
Krista
Patrick

Since I needed to focus on my studies, I tried to take a break from USS activities in 2025. I say tried because when you have people like Anca, Krista, Patrick and so many more!!! at Yorkview PS, their enthusiasm and vision keeps drawing you in. I’ll briefly share some of the projects we worked on together.

May 2025

What initially started as Krista’s wish to have an area where students could gather together in the Nature Corner, soon began taking shape when several factors came together.

When a wind storm sadly brought down her neighbor’s beautiful willow tree, long-time USS volunteer Sanam saw an opportunity to bring the cut logs to the school as seating to create a gathering area for the children.

The children helped transport the mulch generously donated by a parent, and once the logs were set up, this corner has become a favorite outdoor education area for students and teachers alike.

May 27, 2025 – Potting up seedlings

Over the winter, Krista’s class had successfully wintersown native plants and now the students needed to learn how to divide and pot up the seedlings. All Anca needed was a little bit of guidance and she sprang into action to teach the children how to do just that!

A second Nature Corner garden

With the support of yet another long-time USS member Pat and a great supply of seedlings grown by students as well as some donated by USS members, the students built and planted a second garden.

A second Bus Loop planting

Anca had always had a vision that the entire bus loop in front of the school would be planted with native plants, so she and Krista, with the support of other Yorkview PS parent council members and staff, organized a fun planting session using donated soil and mulch and seedlings grown by the students. Another longtime USS member Maia and Sayeh also came to support with supplies, seedlings and tools.

One of the important things we also tackled in this garden was the educational aspect by creating designated insect nesting zones where plant material from the previous year could be placed. It was also important to point out the plant varieties that could be found in the garden

June 06, 2025 Yorkview Fun Fair

When Sayeh asked for volunteers to help at Yorkview’s Fun Fair, long-time USS member Linda offered to help. Sayeh and Linda showed up with lots of giveaways including seedlings, handouts and a chance to pot up seedlings.

December 2025

This past December I got a message that Krista’s students had questions about gardening, so I went to Yorkview, eager to answer gardening questions. To my surprise, it was just an excuse to get me in so the children could thank me with a beautiful drawing and adorable card. I asked them to sign the drawing, and now it will be a cherished reminder of these beautiful children and the inspirational community at Yorkview PS.

I’m Sayeh

I started this group in 2021 and it has grown to become a community of friends. Take a look at some of what our merry group has accomplished together.

Every year I open up registration to a new cohort and our next registration will take place in January 2026.
